Shanghai Skyline

A rare smog-free day in Shanghai, China. Shot from “the Bund”.

Shanghai Tower

This is a view from September 26th of Shanghai Tower. It is the second tallest building in the world and the tallest in China at 632meters and 128 stories.

CNN Travel Photo of the Week – Sept. 2nd, 2015

This has been kicking around deeper in the CNN site for a while but finally my photo was chosen as the photo of the day.

The Buddhist temple of Shwezigon Paya is one of the best maintained temples near this ancient city. "After the trip past the stone stupas, when I entered the compound, I was awestruck by the majesty of the golden monument," said Robert Winter, who visited in 2014.

Osaka Reflection

And sometimes just a strange sight catches my eye. This was in Osaka across the canal from an amusement park. The big face in the center of the ferris wheel reflected in the window of the industrial looking building. Is that art? Who’s to say?….

Gateway of India

(Taken February 2012)

The Gateway of India was finished in 1924 as a commemoration of the royal visit by King George V and Queen Mary in 1911. The Gateway is located in South Mumbai (formerly Bombay) on the waterfront across from the Taj Mahal Hotel. The hotel, opened in 1903, was the site of the 2008 terrorist attack in which 167 people were killed, 31 of them at the hotel. The hotel was restored from the destruction and fire and the only evidence of the attack is a high level of security in the area.

From a tourist perspective, this is the place to be to walk, buy from the street vendors under the Banyan trees and walk up the many streets for shopping. If you need to find a taxi, there is a cluster of them at the corner of the road between the Gateway and the Taj.

Window on the Rhein – Switzerland

On the border of Switzerland and Germany is the small Swiss village of Stein am Rhein. If one is in the area, I recommend stopping for lunch and taking in the well preserved architecture.

This series of shots was taken from Shanghai’s World Financial Center. The building itself is 492.0 meters (1,614.2 ft) tall and the observation deck is 474 m (1,555 ft) above the ground. Although a challenge to shoot through the ever-present smog in Shanghai and despite the reflections on the windows from the inside lights, I was able to get the shots. The smog in the end provided a diffusion of the city lights for an interesting result.
